Foods That Increase Testosterone: 12 Best Picks for Men

Dr Ibrahim Aug 03, 2026

Most men only start reading about testosterone once something feels wrong. Workouts stop paying off. Sleep turns shallow. Motivation goes quiet for no obvious reason.

The search usually jumps straight to injections or pharmacy pills. But something comes earlier than either of those. Your body produces this hormone daily, and it does so from the kind of food you eat.

This guide covers the foods that increase testosterone, the nutrients behind them, and the habits that quietly undo your progress. Treat it as a shortlist of foods for a men’s health diet plan.

Quick Look: Testosterone Boosting Foods

Food

Key nutrient

What it does

Oysters, shellfish

Zinc

Supports Leydig cell function, limits aromatase

Salmon, mackerel, sardines

Vitamin D, omega-3

Hormone synthesis, lower inflammation

Whole eggs

Cholesterol, selenium

Supplies the building block for steroid hormones

Spinach, kale, chard

Magnesium, vitamins A, C, K

Frees testosterone from SHBG, fights oxidative stress

Avocado, olive oil

Monounsaturated fat, boron

Slows testosterone breakdown, improves LDL

Pomegranate, berries, cocoa

Flavonoid antioxidants

Protects hormone-producing cells, lowers cortisol

Garlic, onions, ginger

Allicin, phytochemicals

Supports LH signaling and sperm quality

12 Foods That Increase Testosterone

fried fish on a plate

1. Fatty Fish

Salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout, and tuna provide vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. Your body treats vitamin D less like a nutrient and more like a hormone, and Leydig cells carry receptors for it. If your levels are already fine, more of it may not add much. The research there is split. But if you are running low, bringing your blood level (25(OH)D) back up usually helps. Two servings a week is plenty.

2. Oysters and Shellfish

Nothing beats them on zinc. Prawns, mussels, crab, and clams count too. Zinc supports Leydig cell function and helps limit the conversion of testosterone into estrogen, and serious zinc deficiency is a recognized cause of hypogonadism.

3. Whole Eggs

Skip the egg white omelette. Everything useful sits in the yolk: cholesterol, healthy fat, vitamin D, plus selenium. That last one (selenium) pulls antioxidant duty and may lift testosterone production by switching on the genes behind it.

4. Lean Red Meat and Poultry

Skimp on protein and your levels tend to follow it down. Beef and lamb bring zinc in a form the gut takes up easily. Plants carry zinc too, but they come with phytates, which bind the mineral and block a good chunk of it from ever reaching you. So a steak stretches further than a bowl of lentils.

5. Spinach and Dark Leafy Greens

Kale, chard, bok choy, and broccoli sit near the top of any magnesium list. That mineral does two jobs at once: it keeps hormone synthesis running, and it elbows testosterone off SHBG binding sites so more of it stays free. In a 2018 study, the men eating the least dark green veg turned up with lower serum testosterone and more hypogonadism.

6. Nuts and Seeds

A handful of pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews or peanuts hands you zinc and magnesium together. Most adults are running short on magnesium anyway, according to the NIH. Keep a jar at your desk, and the gap closes itself.

7. Brazil Nuts

Selenium keeps testicular function and semen quality ticking over. Watch the dose, though. Adults need roughly 55 micrograms a day, and one Brazil nut can pack about 70. Stick to one or two. Past that, you drift toward selenium toxicity.

8. Avocado and Olive Oil

Monounsaturated fat keeps showing up alongside healthy hormone readings and better LDL numbers, and both of these are loaded with it. Avocado throws in boron as well, a trace mineral that seems to slow the rate at which testosterone gets broken down.

9. Pomegranate

Pomegranate

Punica granatum is one of the better studied fruits here. Trials in athletes have tied the juice to a testosterone bump, and it pulls cortisol down at the same time. Cortisol and testosterone are always wrestling for the upper hand, so knocking one back gives the other room to work.

10. Berries and Cherries

Anthocyanins and other flavonoid antioxidants fill both of them. Those compounds shield the cells that make your testosterone from free radical damage. Cheap, easy, and they work just as well frozen.

11. Cocoa and Dark Chocolate

Theobroma cacao delivers quercetin, apigenin, and magnesium in a single bite. Just read the label first. A bar packed with sugar undoes whatever the cocoa was doing for you.

12. Garlic, Onions, and Ginger

Everyday ingredients, badly underrated. Garlic contains allicin, and both garlic and onions carry phytochemicals such as flavonoids that appear to support LH release and protect sperm quality. Ginger has shown promise in small studies on semen parameters in men with fertility problems. Cook with all three, generously.

The Mediterranean Diet

Bloodwork does not shift because of one ingredient. It shifts because of how you eat overall. Build your meals around vegetables, fish, olive oil, nuts, whole grains and lean meat, and you get two wins at the same time: weight stays manageable, and insulin sensitivity improves. That second one matters more than most men realize, since insulin resistance scrambles the messaging between brain, pituitary gland and testes.

Think of that pattern as the frame. The twelve testosterone-boosting foods above are what you hang on it.

What Lowers Testosterone

The removal list carries just as much weight as the additions.

  • Ultra-processed food, sugar, and refined carbs drive insulin resistance and belly fat, and more belly fat means more aromatase converting testosterone into estrogen.

  • Trans fats and fried food stoke inflammation, and inflammation puts a damper on Leydig cell output.

  • Heavy alcohol hits the testes directly. Sperm count falls, estrogen climbs, and years of it can shrink testicular tissue or leave you with gynecomastia. Your liver takes the hit too, and that is the organ processing your hormones.

  • Bisphenol-A (BPA) in cheap plastic containers and can linings acts as a hormone disruptor. Glass and steel are simple swaps.

Diet is only half of it, though. Testosterone production peaks during REM sleep, and running on under five hours a night can cut levels by roughly 15 percent. Compound lifts like squats and deadlifts trigger a stronger hormonal response than anything else in the gym, while overtraining does the opposite. And because of aromatase, losing excess weight often raises testosterone on its own.

What a Testosterone-Friendly Day Looks Like

A men’s health diet does not need to be complicated. Here is one ordinary day.

  • Breakfast: three whole eggs with sautéed spinach and half an avocado.
  • Lunch: grilled salmon, brown rice, a salad dressed in olive oil.
  • Afternoon snack: pumpkin seeds, a Brazil nut, two squares of dark chocolate.
  • Dinner: beef or chicken cooked down with garlic and onion, roasted vegetables on the side.

Nothing exotic. Repeat it most days of the week and the nutrient gaps close on their own.

Where Herbal Support Might Help

Food lays the foundation. For men who want to increase testosterone naturally without heading straight for injections, targeted support on top of it makes sense, especially when energy and stamina have been sliding for a while.

MK is our best-selling men's formula, and it targets the same things this article keeps circling back to: your body's own testosterone production, physical strength, and healthy male germ cells.

Our guide on natural testosterone boosters goes deeper into the herbs with real trial data behind them, including ashwagandha, fenugreek, and tongkat ali.

Signs You Should Get Tested

Fixing your diet fixes deficiencies. It will not fix everything. Keep an eye out for:

  • Sex drive that keeps sliding

  • Tiredness a full night’s sleep does not touch

  • Muscle and bone mass slipping away

  • Body hair thinning out

  • Mood swinging for no clear reason

  • Testicles getting smaller

Any of these hanging around past a few weeks earns a blood test, taken fasted in the morning. Under roughly 300 ng/dL is where most doctors start calling it low. Our breakdown of low testosterone symptoms lays out what to check next. If the problem is showing up mainly in bed, start with sexual weakness in men instead. And if you are trying for a baby, head to our male fertility guide, because sperm health and testosterone do not always rise and fall together.

FAQs

Which food increases testosterone the fastest?

None of them, honestly. Give any change six to eight weeks before you decide it is not working.

Do eggs raise testosterone?

The yolk carries cholesterol, vitamin D, and selenium, all of which are used in hormone production. Whites on their own contribute almost nothing here.

Can food alone fix low testosterone?

Sometimes, if you were running on deficiencies. A solid men’s health diet will not carry clinically low levels on its own, though. Sleep, training, and testing all have to come with it.

Does soy lower testosterone in men?

Not at normal intake. Human research shows little to no effect.

In most men, what is the main cause of low testosterone?

Mostly age. Levels slide roughly 1 to 2 percent every year past 30, and bad sleep, extra weight, and heavy drinking push that along faster.

The Bottom Line

No single food is going to rescue you. Your numbers respond to the overall pattern: enough zinc, magnesium, vitamin D and selenium, enough real fat and protein on the plate, far less sugar and alcohol, and a bodyweight you can carry without strain.

Pick three swaps this week. That is the cheapest way to increase testosterone naturally, and it costs you nothing but a grocery list. Then look at sleep and training, which our complete men’s health guide and our overview of herbal medicine for men’s health both cover in depth.
