Complete List of All Liver Diseases: Their Causes and Symptoms

Doctor Ibrahim Feb 21, 2026

Your liver works 24/7 to filter out toxins, store energy, and help you digest your meals. But because it does so much, there are a lot of ways things can go wrong. Most people don't realize their liver is struggling until they feel really exhausted. Since the symptoms are so quiet, it helps to know what to look for. Here is the full list of liver diseases, covering everything from common issues to the ones you rarely hear about.

What are the signs of liver damage?

Early on, you might just feel a bit tired. But as things get worse, your body starts to send clearer signals. Common symptoms include:

  • Yellow skin and eyes (Jaundice)

  • Dark urine

  • Pale or clay-colored poop

  • Swelling

  • Itchy skin

  • Chronic fatigue

The most common and easy-to-identify sign is Jaundice (the yellow skin or eyes) and dark urine. Even if you’re drinking enough water, your pee might look darker than normal.

Complete List of All Liver Diseases (A to Z)

This list of all liver diseases explains what they are and exactly how they happen.

A

  • Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy (AFLP): This is a rare but scary condition. It happens during the last few months of pregnancy when fat builds up quickly in the liver. Doctors aren't 100% sure why it happens, but it seems to be related to how the baby's body breaks down fat.

  • Alagille Syndrome: This is a genetic problem. People are born with very few bile ducts. Because there aren't enough "pipes" to move bile out of the liver, the bile gets stuck and causes scarring.

  • Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease (ALD): This is caused by drinking more alcohol than the liver can handle over many years. The alcohol kills liver cells, leading to fat buildup, then swelling, and finally permanent scars.

  • Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency: This is a genetic condition. Your liver is supposed to make a protein that protects your lungs. If that protein is shaped wrong, it gets stuck inside the liver instead of leaving. This irritates the liver and leaves the lungs unprotected.

  • Autoimmune Hepatitis: This is part of the autoimmune diseases list (of the liver). It happens when your immune system, which is supposed to fight germs, starts attacking your liver cells instead. No one knows exactly why the body flips this switch, but it leads to chronic swelling.

B

  • Bile Duct Cancer: Also called cholangiocarcinoma, this starts in the tubes that carry bile. It can be caused by long-term inflammation of the ducts or certain parasite infections.

  • Biliary Atresia: This happens to babies shortly after birth. The bile ducts are either blocked or missing entirely. It isn't passed down from parents; it just happens while the baby is growing in the womb. It is one of the top reasons on the list of disease which indicate liver transplant for kids.

  • Budd-Chiari Syndrome: This is caused by blood clots that block the veins coming out of the liver. When the blood can't leave, it backs up, causing the liver to grow too large and stop working.

C

  • Caroli Disease: This is a rare condition you are born with. The bile ducts inside the liver get too wide, like little balloons. This makes the bile sit still, which causes infections and stones.

  • Cirrhosis: This is the big one on the list of chronic liver diseases. It isn't a disease itself but the result of long-term damage. It’s caused by years of "injuries" to the liver from alcohol, fat, or viruses that eventually turn into hard scar tissue.

  • Crigler-Najjar Syndrome: This is a very rare genetic issue. The liver is missing an enzyme needed to process bilirubin. Without it, the bilirubin builds up to dangerous levels from the day the baby is born.

  • Cystic Fibrosis-Related Liver Disease: This is caused by the thick, sticky mucus that people with cystic fibrosis produce. That mucus can clog up the bile ducts, leading to inflammation and scarring.

D

  • Drug-Induced Liver Injury (DILI): This is caused by toxins. It could be from taking too much of a medicine like Tylenol, certain herbal supplements that aren't safe, or being exposed to chemicals at work.

  • Dubin-Johnson Syndrome: This is a genetic condition that makes the liver look black. It’s usually harmless and is caused by a tiny glitch in how the liver moves bilirubin into the bile.

F

  • Focal Nodular Hyperplasia (FNH): This is a non-cancerous lump. It’s caused by an abnormal blood vessel that’s been there since birth. It’s very common in women and usually doesn't need treatment.

G

  • Galactosemia: This is an inherited disorder. It’s caused by the body being unable to process galactose, which is a sugar in milk. If a baby with this drinks milk, it creates a toxic buildup that damages liver health.

  • Gaucher Disease: This is a genetic disease caused by a missing enzyme. Without it, fatty substances build up in the liver and spleen, making them much larger than they should be.

  • Gilbert Syndrome: This is a very common genetic "glitch." It’s caused by a slight deficiency in a liver enzyme. It’s harmless, but it might make your eyes look a little yellow if you’re really stressed or haven't eaten.

H

  • Hemochromatosis: This is on the genetic liver disease list. It is caused by a "broken" gene that tells your body to absorb way too much iron from your food. That iron has nowhere to go, so it settles in the liver and rusts it from the inside out.

  • Hepatitis (A, B, C, D, E): These are all caused by viruses. Hep A usually comes from dirty food or water. Hep B and C come from contact with infected blood. Over time, these viruses use your liver cells to make copies of themselves, killing the cells in the process.

  • Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC): This is the most common liver cancer. It is almost always caused by long-term damage like cirrhosis or chronic Hepatitis B or C.

  • Hepatorenal Syndrome: This is caused by severe liver failure. When the liver stops working well, it changes the blood flow in the body so much that the kidneys start to fail too.

L

  • Liver Abscess: This is a pocket of pus. It’s caused by an infection, usually from bacteria that traveled from the gut or a parasite from contaminated water.

  • Liver Adenoma: These are benign tumors. They are often caused by hormonal changes, specifically from taking birth control pills for a long time.

  • Liver Cysts: These are fluid-filled bubbles. Most people are born with them, or they grow slowly over time. They are usually not a problem unless they get big enough to push on other organs.

  • Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency (LALD): This is a rare genetic condition. It’s caused by the body not being able to break down certain fats (cholesterol and triglycerides). These fats then pile up in the liver until it can't function.

N

  • Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Now called MASLD, this is caused by metabolic syndrome. High blood pressure, high blood sugar, and carrying extra weight around the middle cause the liver to store fat it doesn't need.

P

  • Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC): This is an autoimmune disease where your body accidentally attacks the bile ducts inside your liver. When these tubes are gone, the bile gets trapped inside and starts to eat away at your liver.

  • Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC): This happens when swelling over a long time leaves scars inside your bile tubes. It’s a common issue on the list of chronic liver diseases, especially for people who already have gut problems like Ulcerative Colitis.

W

  • Wilson’s Disease: This is a rare find. It’s caused by a faulty gene that stops your body from getting rid of extra copper. Instead of being flushed out, the copper piles up in your liver and brain, which can cause life-threatening damage if you don't catch it early.

Herbal Support for Your Liver

Along with eating well and seeing your doctor regularly, some people add herbal supplements to their daily routine. Herbs can be a gentle, natural way to give your liver extra support over time.

Doctor Ibrahim offers a few herbal options for this. The X6 Fatty Liver Treatment is a daily blend that gives your liver the nutrients it needs to work properly. If you also have trouble with digestion or fat metabolism, the CNA for Fat, Liver and Digestive Health supports your body's natural ability to filter and flush out waste. For more focused support, the MT Liver Support helps protect liver cells from the daily stress of poor diet and pollution.

The good news is that your liver is tough. It is the only organ in the body that can repair and regenerate itself. Many early problems like fatty liver can be managed or even reversed with the right care and small lifestyle changes.
