Body Fat Calculator: Check Your Body Fat % Online
A scale reports one figure and stops there. It can't separate fat from muscle, bone, or water. This body fat calculator takes a handful of tape measurements and estimates your total fat, so the picture has some detail.
Pick the metric tab for kg and cm, or stay with feet, inches, and pounds. Measuring to the nearest half centimeter (roughly a quarter inch) tightens the result.
Use this converter to convert to the unit accepted by the calculator.
Then type the converted value into the matching box below.
| Body fat % (US Navy method) | |

| Fat to lose to reach benchmark | |
| Body fat % (BMI method) |
What Your Result Shows
Seven values come back:
- Body fat percentage (US Navy method): fat's share of your total weight
- Category: essential, athlete, fitness, average, or obese
- Fat mass: how many kilos or pounds of your body are fat
- Lean body mass: everything else you weigh
- Ideal body fat for your age: a benchmark taken from the Jackson and Pollock tables
- Fat to lose to reach that benchmark: the distance between your number and the benchmark
- Body fat percentage (BMI method): a second estimate for cross-checking
Take a man who weighs 70 kg and sits at 15% body fat. He holds 10.5 kg of fat and 59.5 kg of lean mass. The "fat to lose" line works as a reference point only. It is not a goal to chase blindly, and a doctor's advice outranks it.
Body Fat Percentage Chart for Men and Women
This body fat chart for male and female adults shows why each gender gets its own bands. Women store more fat by nature. The chart follows the categories set by the American Council on Exercise (ACE).
| Category | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Essential fat | 10 to 13% | 2 to 5% |
| Athletes | 14 to 20% | 6 to 13% |
| Fitness | 21 to 24% | 14 to 17% |
| Average | 25 to 31% | 18 to 24% |
| Obese | 32% and above | 25% and above |
A normal body fat percentage for most adults falls across the fitness and average bands. A healthy body fat percentage for men and women is roughly 14 to 24% and 21 to 31%. Sitting at or under the essential band carries risk for most people, and a doctor should hear about it.
Ideal Body Fat by Age
Age shifts what counts as ideal, which rules out a single target for all adults. The Jackson and Pollock tables assign a value to each age.
| Age | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 17.7% | 8.5% |
| 25 | 18.4% | 10.5% |
| 30 | 19.3% | 12.7% |
| 35 | 21.5% | 13.7% |
| 40 | 22.2% | 15.3% |
| 45 | 22.9% | 16.4% |
| 50 | 25.2% | 18.9% |
| 55 | 26.3% | 20.9% |
These figures sit below the ACE average band. Treat the values as a rough reference, because builds and health histories vary too much for any table to fit every person.
What Is Body Fat?
Doctors call it adipose tissue. It stores energy, releases hormones, pads the organs, and holds in warmth. It comes in two kinds:
- Essential fat: the baseline amount that keeps a person alive and supports reproduction. It is spread through many parts of the body. The usual level is 2 to 5% of body weight for men and 10 to 13% for women.
- Storage fat: the surplus kept in reserve. Most mentions of body fat point to this kind.
Storage fat is found in two places. The first sits under the skin where a hand can pinch it, and doctors name it subcutaneous fat. The other is visceral fat, which fills the space inside the abdomen around the organs and does more harm.
Body Fat vs BMI
BMI looks only at height and weight, so muscle, bone, and fat all blur together. A muscular person can score high without carrying much fat. Someone else can land in the normal band and still hold extra fat around the waist. Body fat shows what BMI hides, so checking both works best. The BMI calculator gives your BMI, and the result above shows what that weight consists of.
Overweight does not automatically mean too much fat. When surplus storage fat piles up for a long stretch, it can slide into obesity.
How to Calculate Body Fat Percentage
The tool runs on the US Navy method, built at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984. A tape is all it takes, so anyone can calculate body fat at home. How to take each measurement:
- Waist: level with the belly button for men, and the narrowest point for women. Keep the stomach relaxed.
- Neck: just under the voice box, with the tape tilting slightly down toward the front. Keep the neck relaxed and not stretched forward.
- Hip (women only): the widest point.
- Height and weight: barefoot, in light clothing.
Repeat every reading once more and use the mean of both.
Body fat formula (metric units, cm)
This body fat formula uses belly (waist) and neck size along with height.
Body fat formula (inches)
Anyone curious about how to calculate body fat by hand can plug numbers into these. The calculator runs the same math instantly.
Fat mass and lean body mass
Lean body mass = body weight - fat mass
BMI Method for Body Fat
The second estimate needs only your BMI and age. No tape comes into play.
Adult women: BF% = 1.20 x BMI + 0.23 x age - 5.4
Boys: BF% = 1.51 x BMI - 0.70 x age - 2.2
Girls: BF% = 1.51 x BMI - 0.70 x age + 1.4
This route is faster but less personal, since it cannot tell where fat sits on the body. When both estimates land close together, confidence in the result rises.
Why Body Fat Distribution Differs
Fat gathers at a different speed in every person. Genes, habits, eating patterns, and activity level all have a say. In certain people, the fat around the midsection holds on the longest.
Men and women also keep fat in different spots, and the pattern shifts with time. After 40, falling sex hormones may push fat toward the belly in men. In women, especially after menopause, it may settle on the hips and thighs.
Health Risks of Too Much Body Fat
Surplus fat raises the odds of long-term disease. The World Health Organization reports that 16% of adults worldwide were living with obesity in 2022. The CDC names high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and gallbladder disease among the conditions that become more likely with overweight and obesity.
Visceral fat draws the most concern. It goes hand in hand with higher LDL cholesterol, lower HDL cholesterol, and insulin resistance. Over time, insulin resistance can push blood sugar up and open the door to type 2 diabetes. Extra fat may also unsettle hormone balance and bring on sleep apnea.
Too little fat has a price as well. Energy drops, hormones can go off track, and women may miss periods.
Simple Ways to Lower Body Fat
Slow and steady beats extreme plans:
- Build meals around protein, vegetables, and fiber.
- Go easy on fried and oily food such as paratha, biryani, and sweets.
- Walk each day and add strength work two or three times a week.
- Sleep 7 to 8 hours a night.
Daily energy needs shift with age, weight, and activity. The calorie calculator offers a starting figure for meal planning.
How Accurate Is This Calculator?
Treat the number as an estimate. A loose tape, body shape, or water level can nudge it up or down. Bioelectrical impedance and underwater (hydrostatic) weighing are sharper, but both need special equipment. The best use of this tool is to watch the trend. Measure every two to four weeks, at the same hour of the day.
