What is ideal weight?

Ideal weight is an estimate of a healthy body weight for a particular height and sex. The concept is also described as target weight, healthy weight, or optimum weight.

No one number works for everyone. These formulas were originally developed to calculate medication doses, not to assess appearance. A healthy adult may weigh several kilograms above or below the calculated figure.

How does an ideal weight calculator work?

Every ideal body weight formula starts with a base weight for an adult who is exactly 5 feet (152 cm) tall. Then it adds a set amount for each extra inch of height. The calculation uses only height and sex.

FormulaMenWomen
Hamwi (1964)48 kg, plus 2.7 kg per inch above 5 feet45.5 kg, plus 2.2 kg per inch above 5 feet
Devine (1974)50 kg, plus 2.3 kg per inch above 5 feet45.5 kg, plus 2.3 kg per inch above 5 feet
Robinson (1983)52 kg, plus 1.9 kg per inch above 5 feet49 kg, plus 1.7 kg per inch above 5 feet
Miller (1983)56.2 kg, plus 1.41 kg per inch above 5 feet53.1 kg, plus 1.36 kg per inch above 5 feet

Calculate ideal weight with the Devine formula

Take a man who is 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm), which is 10 inches above the base. The sum is 50 + (2.3 × 10) = 73 kg, or roughly 161 lbs.

Why do calculators differ?

The four equations came from separate research teams, working decades apart:

PersonHamwiDevineRobinsonMiller
Man, 5'10" (178 cm)75.0 kg73.0 kg71.0 kg70.3 kg
Woman, 5'4" (163 cm)54.3 kg54.7 kg55.8 kg58.5 kg

A 3 to 5 kg spread is expected, and the midpoint is a sensible reference.

Healthy BMI range and BMI vs ideal weight

Body mass index (BMI) is a height-to-weight ratio, found by dividing weight by height squared. In line with WHO guidelines, the CDC defines a healthy adult BMI as 18.5 to under 25. The result is a weight range, not one figure.

Current BMI can be checked with our BMI calculator.

A stricter range for South Asian adults

People of Pakistani, Indian, and other South Asian origin have a higher risk of diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels. A WHO expert consultation recommended additional action points for Asian populations, with risk rising from a BMI of 23. For this group, aiming for the lower half of the healthy range is generally advisable. Our prediabetes guide explains the associated risks.

The table shows body weight according to height. Adults do not need a separate weight chart by age.

Ideal weight for men and women

Healthy weight difference between men and women of the same height
Men and women of the same height have different healthy weights.

For the same height, men are generally expected to weigh 10 to 20% more than women, for three reasons:

  • Men typically have greater muscle mass, and muscle is denser than fat.
  • Women generally have lower bone density.
  • Men are taller on average.

Because of this, the formulas set the ideal weight for men from a base of 48 to 56 kg, and the ideal weight for women from 45.5 to 53 kg.

So what should I weigh? A weight chart according to height and age and a table of weight according to height and age in kg both rely on the same adult bands. To see where your body fat levels sit, try our body fat calculator.

How body frame size changes your ideal weight

Bone structure differs between adults of the same height. Frame size can be estimated by measuring wrist circumference just below the wrist bone.

GroupSmall frameMedium frameLarge frame
Women under 157 cm (5'2")Under 14 cm14 to 14.6 cmOver 14.6 cm
Women 157 to 165 cmUnder 15.2 cm15.2 to 15.9 cmOver 15.9 cm
Women over 165 cm (5'5")Under 15.9 cm15.9 to 16.5 cmOver 16.5 cm
Men over 165 cm (5'5")14 to 16.5 cm16.5 to 19.1 cmOver 19.1 cm

A common clinical adjustment is to subtract about 10% from the formula result for a small frame and add about 10% for a large frame.

Other factors that affect healthy weight

FactorEffect
Muscle massGreater lean body mass raises metabolism, so athletes may weigh more with little body fat
Body compositionBody fat percentage is a stronger health indicator than weight alone
Abdominal fatFat stored around the waist is linked to fatty liver disease and diabetes
EthnicitySouth Asian adults show health risks at lower body weights
Health conditionsThyroid disorders, PCOS, and certain medicines can affect weight

Two adults of the same height can still have quite different healthy weights, and these factors show why.

Using it as a goal weight calculator

When you enter a current weight, the tool works as a goal weight calculator or target weight calculator and shows the gap between your current and target weight.

A safe rate of weight loss is 0.25 to 0.5 kg per week. At this pace, losing 8 kg takes roughly four to eight months.

Weight loss requires a modest calorie deficit. Our BMR calculator estimates daily calorie needs to support meal planning. Balanced nutrition and exercise together produce the most lasting results.

Limits of any ideal weight formula

These formulas rely on height and sex alone. They do not consider activity level, muscle mass, physical disabilities, or medical history. A physically fit adult may sit above the calculated value and still be in good health. Healthy daily habits matter more than an exact figure.

Frequently asked questions

What should my weight be for my height, and how do I judge a healthy weight?

Place your four formula results next to the BMI band for your height and look for where they overlap.

Can ideal weight change?

In adulthood, the formula result stays constant. A healthy weight may still shift after pregnancy, significant muscle gain, or height loss in later life.

How much weight should I lose?

A reduction of 5 to 10% of current body weight can improve blood sugar, blood pressure, and energy levels.

Is this a height-to-weight calculator?

Yes. Enter a height such as 170 cm, and it returns the ideal weight for that height straight away.

Kya yeh calculator Urdu bolne walon ke liye bhi mufeed hai?

Ji haan. Apna qad aur jins likhein, natija foran saamne aa jata hai. Agar wazan zyada hai to har hafte aadha kilo kam karne ka hadaf rakhein.
